Recently, Ortho Kinematics, a medical diagnostic company from Texas, USA, announced the completion of a $18.6 million Series D equity financing.
Founded in 2006, Ortho Kinematics develops a radioactive analytical diagnostic instrument, Vertebral Motion Analysis (VMA), to examine the stability and symmetry of the patient's spine. The device was launched in 2015 and in 2016 added a technical module for sagittal sequence evaluation of the spinal canal. It is reported that the funds from this round will be used for the commercialization of VMA equipment and the further development of VMA technology.

Currently, traditional spinal stability testing requires standard spinal bending X-ray examination, and the patient is free to determine the degree of flexion and manual measurement of spinal motion by a physician. In the United States, approximately 5 million people perform this test each year, more than those who do spinal CT imaging and MR imaging.
VMA equipment allows for more precise and highly specific testing of the stability of the spine based on examination of spinal motion. The device uses a standard C-arm (mirror) to create an image that helps the patient complete the curvature of the spine. In the traditional spinal stability test, many patients were unable to detect the instability of the spine because they wanted to avoid the pain of bending.

Typically within a few hours, the user can see the X-ray image and results report of the test from any networked device. This technology allows surgeons to better communicate with insurance companies and obtain approval for spinal surgery in patients. At the same time, there is a large amount of diagnostic data and video support, which can also make patients' medical consultations more effective. Currently, this device has been included in the US Class I CPT product code list.
