New technology for detecting cancer cells

Author: Zhang Meng Ran Release Date: 2018-12-06

According to a medical research report published by the British Journal of Nature and Communication on the 5th, a cancer cell detection technology that can be completed in 10 minutes is available. This test quickly completes the initial diagnosis by identifying DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) differences between cancer cells and healthy cells.

The process by which a methyl group attaches to DNA is called methylation, a process that is genetically manipulated. DNA methylation, as a form of chemical modification of DNA, can alter genetic performance without altering the DNA sequence. In all "mature" human cells, DNA carries these modifications.

The genomic information of cancer cells and healthy cells is significantly different. Cancer cells are a kind of mutated cells, which are the source of cancer. The biggest difference between them and normal cells is the infinite proliferation, transformability and easy transfer. Genomic differences have also led to differences in methylation levels and patterns in most types of cancer cells.

This time, the University of Queensland researcher Matt Trau and colleagues found that different methylation in cancer cells affects the physical and chemical properties of DNA. Among these characteristics, the researchers found that DNA is particularly tightly linked to gold nanoparticles, and they used this feature to develop a cancer detection method.

The new method requires only a small amount of purified genomic DNA from the patient to complete the test within 10 minutes, and the results can be discerned only by the naked eye. The team has tested this method in genomic DNA representing more than 100 human samples of different cancer types—72 cancer patients and 31 healthy individuals.

At the current stage, the researchers say that this method can only detect the presence of cancer cells and it is not yet possible to identify their type or disease progression. More samples should be tested in the future and more detailed analytical studies should be conducted wherever possible.

It takes 10 minutes to discern the results of cancer tests with the naked eye. Does it mean that future cancer tests are as simple as testing blood types? The more convenient and direct the detection means, the clearer the test results, and the more valuable time for the patient's next treatment stage. After all, if the cancer is fiercer than the tiger, if every essential link can compete for one point and one second, it may save valuable life in a dangerous situation. Technology can change life, so it can be seen!
