India is nurturing bio-engineering rice with at least three times the levels of iron, zinc and vitamins as a viable strategy for addressing malnutrition in the country. Rice, which is a staple food for most people, lacks vitamin A and trace element iron. So researchers are trying to breed varieties rich in these trace elements. At the 9th Asian Nutrition Conference, SKDatta, an expert from the International Rice Research Institute of the Philippines, said that such a breed has been successfully cultivated. “We have developed enhanced rice using genetic technology. Compared to the rice obtained by traditional methods of regulating seed after polishing, it has three times more iron.†Of course, this type of rice should be put into commercial use. It takes at least five to seven years for chemical production to conduct extensive tests of biosafety, environmental safety and food safety. This will be planted and tested in experimental plots. Finally, tons of seeds have to be cultivated so that they can reach farmers.
