Am Sociol Rev: Growing up in poor families is prone to adult health problems

Release date: 2016-04-01

Researchers from Purdue University have found that growing in a poor environment or being abused by a parent can lead to a range of health problems later in life.

This conclusion is based on data from the US National Middle Age Development Survey (which includes a total of approximately 1,800 adults). The relevant information was collected twice in total, the first in 1996, when the participants were 25-74, the second was in 2006, and the participants were 35-84. The purpose of the two surveys was to reflect the health changes of the participants over the decade.

“Health and quality of life are important issues in the first survey. However, when we surveyed again 10 years later, we found that childhood poverty or frequent abuse can lead to new health problems such as cancer and heart disease. Etc., says sociologist Kenneth F. Ferraro.

In this study, the researchers investigated the family composition of each participant, including whether or not they were accompanied by their parents during their childhood. Afterwards, the researchers analyzed the correlation between these childhood experiences and 14 adult problems.

The results show that the family composition only affects four adult problems, including smoking habits and economic levels. In contrast, childhood poverty experiences affect nine adult problems, while parental abuse affects 11 items.

The findings suggest that physical and linguistic abuse increases health problems in adulthood.

“We are very likely to underestimate this impact because people with severe conditions cannot participate in social surveys,” Ferraro said. “However, we identified some early origins of adult diseases, and we should use other resources to break this risk. Relevance."
