According to a recent report by the US Science magazine, scientists have been searching for a human stem cell that can reliably develop into bones, cartilage, etc. For a decade, American scientists have finally found this bone stem cell in the human body. Studies have shown that these stem cells can be induced by fat that has been discarded after liposuction, which indicates that the source is rich, which lays a foundation for future research and treatment of fractures and osteoporosis.

The latest study was conducted by a team led by Michael Long Jake of Stanford University, after they discovered bone stem cells in mice. In 2015, the Longjik team conducted a "Rainbow Mouse" (a genetically engineered mouse with different stem cells in different colors, and researchers can use this to accurately track which stem cells produce bone-forming cells) in the body of mesenchymal stem cells. Studies have identified genes within these cells that reveal the genetic characteristics of mouse bone stem cells.

But repeating this process in the human body is not an easy task, "because there is no 'rainbow man'." The research team took a different approach, using human fetal bones to study, and looking for cells with similar genetic characteristics to mouse bone stem cells, and then isolated cells that reliably formed new bones and cartilage in laboratory culture dishes.

To confirm that these cells do possess the characteristics of bone stem cells, they studied adult bone fragments, found the signature cells in them, and cultivated them in culture dishes, which resulted in new bones and cartilage. The important thing is that these cells don't turn into fat, muscles or anything else. Long Jake said: "These are real bone stem cells."

Moreover, the researchers isolated stromal cells from liposuction fat and cultured them in culture dishes along with bone growth factor proteins, creating bone stem cells as well. Long Jake said: "Every year, 500,000 Americans suck their own fat out and discard it as medical waste, which is the material we can use to generate bone stem cells."

Although it takes several years from actual application, Long Jake believes that these cells will be used to replace damaged bones and joint tissues, or to treat degenerative bone diseases such as osteoporosis.
