Pharmaceutical researchers at the University of North Carolina converted skin cells into cancer-trapping stem cells to destroy brain tumors. The results were recently published in Nature Communications, based on the 2007 Nobel Prize— - Convert skin cells into embryonic stem cells. Now researchers have found a new use of the technology - killing brain cancer.
Dr. Shawn Hingtgen, a professor of pharmacy at the University of North Carolina, said that "patients urgently need a better standard of care." Because of the difficulty of treatment, the two-year survival rate of gliomas is only 30%, even if the surgeon removes For most tumors, tumors will inevitably grow back again, and most patients die after a year and a half of diagnosis.
Hingtgen and his team attempt to design a personalized treatment regimen through the skin cells of glioblastoma patients themselves to escape cancer regeneration and thereby effectively kill glioblastoma. In this study, the researchers reprogrammed fibroblasts (producing collagen and connective tissue) into neural stem cells. After testing in mice, the researchers found that these neural stem cells have a natural ability to shuttle through the entire brain and kill residual cancer cells. At the same time, the researchers also found that these stem cells can be engineered to produce proteins that kill tumors, further combating cancer.
Depending on the type of tumor, the researchers used new techniques to extend the survival of mouse patients to 160%-220%. The research team will focus on human stem cells and detect more effective anticancer drugs. Hingtgen said, "We want to explore whether these induced neural stem cells are well aware of cancer cells and whether they can be used for treatment. This is the first time that reprogramming technology has been used directly for cancer treatment." The Hingtgen team is currently improving the persistence of stem cells, they found Stem cells need a physical model to support and organize. "Without such a structure, stem cells will dissociate too quickly, which has no benefit," Hingtgen said.
