From the USC Stem Cell Institute, a research team led by Cheng-Ming Chuong recently discovered that in mice, by pulling 200 hairs in a special way and density, they can induce 1,200 alternative hairs (translated, If you want to grow your hair, you must first pull your hair and grow. The study began a few years ago when the first author of the article, visiting scholar Chih-Chiang Chen, came to USC University from the National Yang-Ming University of Taiwan and the Veterans General Hospital. As a dermatologist, Chen knows that hair follicle damage can affect the microenvironment around it, and Chuong's lab has found that this microenvironment change, in turn, can also affect hair regeneration. Based on these theories, they believe that it is possible to activate more hair follicles by using the microenvironment (the legendary scientific basis for "white hair pulling a long ten").
To test this hypothesis, Chen applied a clever strategy to use a different method on the back of the mouse to pull 200 hairs one by one (it is not easy to do a research this year). When a low-density method is used, when hair is plucked from a region having a diameter of more than 6 mm, no hair is regenerated. However, when using a high-density method to pluck hair from a 3 to 5 mm diameter area, approximately 450 to 1300 hairs are regenerated, including some hair outside the plucking area.
In collaboration with Arthur D. Lander of the University of California, Irvine, the research team found that this process of regeneration relies on the principle of “quorum sensingâ€, how a system responds to only the affected part, not the whole stimulus. In this case, quorum sensing explains how the hair follicle system responds to the removal of a portion of the hair, rather than the stimulation of the entire hair.
Through molecular level analysis, the team found that these hair follicle extraction signals release inflammatory proteins, which recruit immune cells to quickly reach the site of injury. These immune cells then release signaling molecules, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), which, when reached a certain concentration, can communicate with the extracted and unextracted hair follicles. "This work suggests that the same process may also exist in the physiological or pathological processes of other organs, although other phenomena may not be as easy to observe as hair regeneration," Chuong said.
In addition to this latest discovery, Science recently identified another of Chuong's work as one of the top 10 breakthrough discoveries in 2014, namely how the regulation of feather hair follicle stem cells has led to the evolution of feather dinosaurs into modern birds. Chuong was also selected as a researcher at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in February 2015.
