Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes partial or total hair loss in patients, which can occur on the scalp, other surfaces of the body, eyelashes, eyebrows, and the like.
In 66 patients who received Xeljanz (tofacitinib citrate), 50% of the patients developed new hair within 3 months of treatment.
Dr. Brett King, assistant professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine, said that the mechanism of action of tofatinib is that the systemic immune system attacks hairy hair follicles.
King added that for the most common type of hair loss (male type baldness), the drug is probably not effective because this type of hair loss is not an autoimmune disease.
In this study, King and colleagues treated the patient for 3 months, and Xeljanz's drug dose was 5 mg/time, 2 times/day.
During the treatment, 50% of the patients developed new hair, and 1/3 of the patients grew more than half of the original hair.
King added that the adverse effects of this treatment are mild.
Xeljanz drugs are currently very expensive, and the annual cost of treatment is as high as $40,000. The drug has not yet been approved for the treatment of plaque alopecia, and in the United States, the drug has not been included in the health care system.
The other two scientists from the study were very excited about the results of the study.
"Plain hair loss is a symptom that makes patients and doctors very headaches and helpless, and the current treatment is very unsatisfactory," said Dr. Katy Burris of the Northwell Health Center.
"Plain alopecia can occur at any age, and for some patients, the symptoms have a serious impact on life," said Doris Day, a dermatologist at the Knox Hill Hospital.
“The good news is that Xeljanz has an effect on patients who have been sick for 5-6 years. In the first month of treatment, new hair will start to grow, and the improvement will be very obvious, almost reaching normal hair volume.â€
