At the end of May 2016, the FDA approved Auris Surgical's medical robot ARES (short for Auris Robotic Endoscopy System), which can now be used to diagnose and treat patients.
Auris, who described himself as "a Silicon Valley-based technology company," was previously thought to be a microsurgical system designed to eliminate cataracts. The company also filed several patent applications. However, IEEE Spectrum surveyed Auris' current and former employees and found that it has a greater ambition to build the next generation of surgical robots and expand the range of robots.
A closer look at the patent application filed by Auris scientists reveals that the company is focused on intraluminal surgery. This requires the surgeon to use a flexible robot to treat diseases of the throat, lungs and gastrointestinal system through the body's natural openings, especially the mouth.
Because endoscopic surgery does not require large incisions, or (usually) general anesthesia, ARES can make endoscopic procedures easier, thereby benefiting those who are unable to withstand trauma during routine surgery. The surgeon remotely controls the device and can see images taken by a miniature camera mounted on the endoscope. This eliminates the need to rely on external imaging (such as CT scans or fluoroscopy) to guide the endoscope.
At present, Auris has successfully performed at least one robotic operation of human surgery in countries outside the United States.
The Society for American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons has estimated that in the United States, effective endoscopic treatment of obesity and reflux disease alone can help more than 1 million patients each year.
It is worth mentioning that Auris is the fourth surgical robot company founded by Dr. Frederic Moll. Moll is also the co-founder of Intuitive Surgical ($ISRG), which produces the famous Da Vinci surgical robot. In April 2016, Intuitive Surgical announced the acquisition of Hansen Medical, another company founded by Moll, for $80 million.
In addition, many other players are also studying the capabilities of Intuitive. Medtronic ($ MDT) revealed that it is working on the development of its tenth surgical robot model, which could be launched in 2018 and generate real income in 2019; Johnson & Johnson ($JNJ) In 2015, Verb Surgical, a robotic joint venture with Verily, was established.
